Understanding Search

Search Window
  • Access Search from the magnifying glass in the top toolbar
  • The window opens with a search type of Any or All, depending on your Search Settings. It can be changes for individual searches but will revert to the default for each new search
    • When using Any the criterion are considered as: "criterion 1" OR "criterion 2" OR "criterion 3"
    • When using All the criterion are considered as: "criterion 1" AND "criterion 2" AND "criterion 3"
  • The default Search Scope (Search Scope) is set in the Search Settings. It can be changed for individual searches but will revert to the default for each new search
  • If you change the selection for the included options: Trash/Junk/Sent (Search Include options), it will be remembered in subsequent searches
  • Start typing to see search suggestions
  • When using multiple search criteria, spaces and commas indicate the end of one criterion and the start of another
  • Put quotes around text when you want spaces in the text to be part of the search or use the
  • Dates for Date Received or Review Dates need to be selected from the suggestion list for MailMaven to recognize them
  • Date Received and Review Date will allow date ranges like "This Week", "This Month", or "This Year"
  • If you want to use multiple search criteria, start typing the context you want (Subject, To, From ...) to bring up the suggestion list, or use the down arrow (⬇︎) to display the context/token options

  • To exclude a term in your search - NOT - use the command key with the minus (⌘ -) .
  • In an Any search to force an AND/OR search use the command key with the plus (⌘ +) on the context token making it a must-have criterion or with the command key with the minus (⌘ -), making it a must-not-have criterion
  • The X on the right clears the search context so you can start from scratch

Toggling +/- on a Criterion

Add the + to the Token/Criterion by placing the cursor at the end of the token/criterion set and clicking the command key with the plus (⌘+)

Add the - to the Token/Criterion by placing the cursor at the end of the token/criterion set and clicking the command key with the minus (⌘-)

  • The Search settings are in Settings->View->Appearance->Search
  • Default Search allows the search to be either All Words or Any Words
    • With All Words selected, the subsequent search is an AND type search
    • With Any Words selected, the subsequent search is an OR type search
  • Default Scope determines where MailMaven looks for messages. The options are All Messages, Selected Mailboxes of Frontmost Viewer, or Last Selected Scope
    • All Messages - all messages in MailMaven
    • Selected Mailboxes of Frontmost Viewer - if you were in a specific mailbox when you clicked the "Search" icon that mailbox will be searched
    • Last Selected Scope - remembers and uses your last scope when searching. You can select specific mailboxes to search in the Search window
